Sustainable Aviation Fuel
We are committed to working with industry partners to address practical obstacles to acceleration of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and usage.
SHAREHOLDER GROUP COLLABORATION
We are actively working with our Shareholders, SMBC, SMFL and Sumitomo Corporation to identify where our significant, combined capabilities can be applied to accelerate SAF production.
- SMBC have a pipeline of SAF projects which require financing and debt arranging
- Sumitomo Corporation are advancing a project to produce SAF (from E2G, or second-generation ethanol) alongside a pipeline of potential investments into SAF production, across the technology pathways
- Together with our Shareholders, we are working to identify our role in helping our customers gain access to more SAF, at a sustainable price
TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN COLLABORATION
Trinity College Dublin (TCD) has a leading global position in researching Sustainable Aviation Fuels within their E3 initiative – (Engineering, Environment and Emerging Technologies) which is tackling complex global problems, such as those faced by the aviation industry.
- We have collaborated with TCD to create a new, state-of-the-art Sustainable Aviation Fuel Research Facility at our new, landmark headquarters in Dublin
- The facility will launch in Spring 2024 and will be an exemplar collaboration between SAF research bodies and the aviation industry
- The team at the Research Facility, led by Prof. Stephen Dooley, will direct the EASA sponsored EU SAF Clearing House – a pre-screening facility to help increase the number of new SAFs in the market. (Pre-screening precedes the much more lengthy and expensive process of ASTM certification, which is required for SAF to be used in place of jet fuel)
- The research facility is also backed by Ryanair and Science Foundation Ireland, who generously support the research efforts by providing excellent researchers and state-of-the-art equipment
ALI SAF RESEARCH INITIATIVE
We are part of a collaboration with 14 member companies of Aircraft Leasing Ireland (ALI) to support a SAF research program in Ireland.
- An initial 4 year engagement with University of Limerick and Trinity College Dublin has launched
- The focus of the research will be on techno-economic feasibility of SAF production in Ireland, including access to feedstock and renewable energy sources
SAF IN RELATION TO OUR EMISSIONS REDUCTION
- We are currently working on plans to obtain SAF in order to reduce the Scope 1 emissions generated by our ferry flights
- There are many obstacles which our customers also experience in terms of securing supply, the large uplift in price versus traditional jet fuel, the availability of physical SAF at the required locations and the early-stage nature of the book-and-claim process
